A winning birthday present for Steve Flesch

Steve Flesch celebrated his 37th birthday by winning the $5 million Colonial tournament by one stroke from Chad Campbell on Sunday.

Flesch carded a three-under-par 67 in windy conditions to finish on 11-under 269 and win his second PGA Tour title.

Campbell, who shared the 54-hole lead with Flesch and Brian Gay, birdied the 18th hole for a 68 and second place. Stephen Ames of Trinidad and Tobago produced the best round of the day, a six-under 64, to take third on 271.

New Zealand's Craig Perks was fourth on 273 following a 68. Bo Van Pelt, Skip Kendall, Tim Petrovic and Robert Gamez tied for fifth on 274.

Gay, who had a 65 in the third round, struggled to a five-over 75 on Sunday to finish tied 14th on 277 at the Colonial Country Club.

Jesper Parnevik, three shots off the lead after three rounds, made a run at the leaders with an eagle at the first hole and a birdie at the third.

The Swede made the turn in a sparkling four-under 31 but found loads of trouble on the back nine. Parnevik had two birdies, three bogeys, one double bogey and a triple bogey for a six-over 41 and a 72 that dropped him into a tie for 14th.

"I've said all week how I love Colonial, the history of great shotmakers like Ben Hogan and Nick Price who have won here," Flesch told reporters.

"I know I've got to believe in myself more, not be so hard on myself. The more I win, the more I'll believe."

Flesch, who won his first tour title at last year's HP Classic of New Orleans, grabbed solo possession of the lead with a par on the 13th hole while Campbell bogeyed the 12th after dumping his approach in a bunker.

A 12-foot birdie putt on the 16th built Flesch's margin to two strokes but he gave one back when a poor approach and an even worse pitch at the 17th resulted in a bogey.

Campbell also found trouble at the par-four 17th when he hit his tee shot into the right rough and made bogey.

The Texan, who had fired a tournament-low 61 on Saturday, provided a bit of drama at the last. Needing to hole out from 104 yards for an eagle two and a tie with Flesch, Campbell struck a wedge to four feet from the pin.

"I felt good going into today and was playing well on the front nine," Campbell said.

"Didn't make many putts on the front. I had some pretty bad lip-outs but that's the way it goes. Hit a lot of bad shots on the back nine.

"Steve gave me a chance, bogeying the 17th. Then I hit it right on 17 where it's pretty much dead over there. You can't do anything over there.

"Making bogey there kind of obviously took my chances away. I hit a good shot on the last hole trying to make it, it was just a little short."
