Maruyama moves two shots clear

Japan's Shigeki Maruyama holds a two-shot lead at the Bay Hill Invitational over Britain's Darren Clarke, American Chad Campbell and Australian Stuart Appleby after Friday's second round.

Maruyama shot his second consecutive six-under-par 66 to move to 12-under-par 132.

Four-time defending champion Tiger Woods shot a two-over-par 74 and fell nine shots behind the leader..

Woods's round featured a double bogey six when he hit his drive out of bounds on the par-four 11th hole.

Host Arnold Palmer shot a seven-over-par 79 which meant he missed the cut but the veteran thrilled the fans when he used a driver on the 18th hole off the fairway to find the green and two putt for par.

Palmer confirmed after his round that this was his last Bay Hill Invitational. He has played 26 straight times going back to the first tournament in 1979.

Maruyama has never had much success at Bay Hill and in three tournaments prior to this year, he had never broken 70.

In the first round on Thursday the Japanese was a bit wild with his driver, hitting only nine of 14 fairways and 10 of 18 greens, but his putter made the difference with just 22 putts.

On Friday, Maruyama's putter was not as hot, but through two rounds he has had 14 birdies and only two bogeys.

After joining the tour in 2000, Maruyama has won three times in the U.S., taking the Greater Milwaukee Open in 2001, the Byron Nelson in 2002 and last year's Chrysler Classic of Greensboro.
