Cevaer eagles way to maiden Tour victory

Christian Cevaer made two eagles to claim his maiden European Tour victory at the Spanish Open Sunday.

Cevaer shot a final-round 69 for a nine-under-par total of 271 to finish a stroke ahead of Argentine Ricardo Gonzalez, Welshman David Park – who had led through three rounds – and Sweden's Peter Hedblom.

The winner collected a cheque for 275,000 euro ($447,000) and a two-year tour exemption.

Marcus Fraser was the best-placed Australian, finishing 10th, four shots behind the Frenchman and he earned 33,000 euro.

Cevaer holed his second shot on the opening hole for his first eagle and did it again at the 16th to overtake then leader Gonzalez.

Gonzalez led by three shots with three holes to play and looked set to follow his Seville Open win last weekend with victory here.

But after Cevaer holed on the 349-yard 16th hole, Gonzalez hit a wayward shot out of bounds and eventually putted three times to record a double bogey six.

Cevaer saved par after going through the back of the 18th to stay one shot ahead and had to watch as Gonzalez, Swede Peter Hedblom and Park all failed to birdie the last to force a play-off and had to share second place.

"It's fabulous and I'm just really happy that my perseverance has paid off," said Cevaer.

"I'm happy that I've clinched one of the first opportunities I have had because I know how tough it is and you do see guys finishing on the podium a lot without winning."
