Ilonen leads after completed second round
Mikko Ilonen of Finland returned to Saujana Golf & Country Club Saturday morning and birdied two of his last three holes to move to 8-under-par 136 and take the lead after the completion of the second round of the Carlsberg Malaysian Open.
"Nice start to the day," said Ilonen, who posted his second consecutive round of 68. "I only had three and a half holes to play so it was perfect. I birdied the last two holes yesterday before play was suspended. Then made two birdies this morning on the seventh and ninth so things are heading in the right direction."
Play was suspended on Friday after heavy rains drenched the Palm Course at Saujana.
Sung-Man Lee and Thaworn Wiratchant were able to complete their second rounds on Friday before the rains came. The duo shares second place at 7-under-par 137. Paul McGinley and Gregory Hanrahan were one shot further back at 6-under-par 138.
Colin Montgomerie, who eagled the par-5 13th before play was halted on Friday, returned to action and found trouble with a bogey at the 15th.
The Scot recovered with back-to-back birdies from the 17th to complete a round of 66. Montgomerie joined Thomas Levet, Terry Price, Fredrik Andersson, James Hepworth, Robert Karlsson, Brad Kennedy and Prayad Marksaeng in a tie for sixth at 5-under-par 139.
The 36-hole cut fell at 1-over-par 145. Among those who failed to qualify for the final two rounds were Soren Hansen and Jarmo Sandelin.
