Big names miss the cut

Sergio Garcia, Jose Maria Olazabal and Mike Weir were among the casualties of the halfway cut after the second round of the 86th U.S. PGA Championship on Friday.

World number five Davis Love III (148) of the U.S. and Britons Lee Westwood (146) and Paul Casey (146) also missed out when the axe fell at Whistling Straits on one-over-par 145. A total of 73 players qualified for the last two rounds.

Garcia, the world number 10, and Casey were inside the cut line with one hole to go but the Spaniard missed a five-footer for par at the 18th while the Englishman crashed to a triple-bogey seven at the ninth, his last.

It was the second major in a row in which Garcia had missed the cut. World number 31 Casey also failed to qualify for the final two rounds of this year's U.S. Open.

World number seven Weir of Canada, the 2003 U.S. Masters champion, returned two 73s to finish on 146. Former Masters winner Olazabal of Spain followed an opening 70 with a 76.

Swede Jesper Parnevik, hoping to take the eye of European Ryder Cup captain Bernhard Langer as the German looks to make his wild card selections for next month's match against the U.S. at Oakland Hills, missed the cut on 147.

There was also frustration for Britain's Justin Rose, who finished on the same mark.

Among the U.S. Ryder Cup hopefuls, Fred Funk, who is eighth in the standings, finished two over. Jerry Kelly, 11th on the list, was nine over.

Tim Herron, 16th in the standings, was 12 over while 19th-placed Jonathan Kaye slumped to 11 over and 20th-placed John Daly ballooned to 13 over.

U.S. Ryder Cup captain Hal Sutton finished three over, world number 11 Kenny Perry was five over and world number nine Jim Furyk nine over.
