Surprise victory for Scott Drummond

Rank outsider Scott Drummond produced one of the biggest shocks in European Tour history on Sunday with a two-shot victory at the Volvo PGA Championship.

The 30-year-old British rookie, fourth reserve for the tour's flagship event, clinched his maiden European Tour title by edging out overnight leader Angel Cabrera of Argentina with a closing eight-under-par 64.

Drummond, whose breakthrough triumph ranks alongside American Ben Curtis's unexpected success at last year's British Open, reeled off birdies at the last two holes to equal the tournament record at 19-under 269.

The Scot, 186th in the European Tour money list at the start of the week and world-ranked 435th, described his eight-birdie 64 as "surreal" after outplaying players like world number two Vijay Singh and third-ranked Ernie Els for the title.

Cabrera, despite eagling the fourth and 12th, had to settle for outright second after a final-round 67.

Six-times major champion Nick Faldo birdied five of the last seven holes on his way to a closing 66 and a three-way tie for fourth at 15-under 273.

"It's a dream come true," said Drummond, who was born in the English county of Shropshire before opting to take the Scottish nationality of his father. "I came here just to try to find four solid rounds because I'd been struggling.

"When I came up the 18th, it was a bit surreal because I'd seen the scene of the crowds coming down the hole so many times and here I was.

"It's hard to believe because my first look at the course was on Monday. I used to live near here but Wentworth was always too busy for me to get on."

Drummond said he had no idea he had been in a winning position with a one-shot lead going down the last: "My caddie Kevin Smith also teaches psychology and he had advised me to take it one shot at a time and not look at any scoreboards.

"I stuck rigidly to that even on the 18th and it was only by the crowd's reaction I knew I'd won."
