Twice major winner Sandy Lyle is not ready for the U.S. Masters old folks home and made his point on Thursday with an opening round even par 72.

For the past two Masters the 46-year-old Lyle, champion in 1988, has been partnered with 67-year-old Tommy Aaron and 66-year-old Charles Coody, both of whom have made the cut just once since 1993.

"I saw the draw and thought it was the starting list from 2003," grumbled Lyle. "I couldn't believe it.

"I am not going to argue, there is nothing I can do about it.

"I look at it as a plus, it makes me look like Tiger Woods knocking the ball 50 yards past my partners.

"I don't mind going off first but I am not ready for this yet."

While Aaron and Coody have accepted a mostly ceremonially role at the year's first major, Lyle has set himself higher objectives, including the possibility of slipping into the coveted green jacket for a second time.

"I'm trying to post the scores and be competitive," said Lyle. "(Jack) Nicklaus won at 46 so it's a good age."
