Two amateurs make it to the weekend
Casey Wittenberg and Brandt Snedeker were the only two amateurs to make the halfway cut at the U.S. Masters on Friday.
Wittenberg, 19, last year's U.S. Amateur runner-up, and Snedeker, 23, the reigning U.S. Amateur Public Links champion, made their first Masters cuts on four-over-par 148.
"I started with a double bogey at the first," said Wittenberg of an early error that moved him to six-over.
"If I was going to miss the cut, I was going to miss it, but I wasn't going to stop trying," he told reporters after finishing with a level-par 72.
Wittenberg hauled himself back to four-over with birdies on the two back-nine par-fives, holes 13 and 15.
Snedeker started the day at one-over and slipped to three-over at the turn. He dropped another shot at the 18th to return a 75.
"Relieved is the best way to put it," Snedeker said. "I just kind of limped in when I hit the ball in the water on the 15th. It was definitely a struggle today."
Nick Flanagan, 19, the reigning U.S. Amateur champion, played in the same group as last year's Masters winner Mike Weir of Canada and both players missed the cut.
Weir (79-70) finished on five-over while Flanagan (78-74) was eight-over.
British Amateur champion Gary Wolstenholme, 43, carded rounds of 77 and 76 for a nine-over total of 153.
"It's disappointing really," Wolstenholme said. "It would have been lovely to make the cut. That is what I came out here to do."
