Garcia finishes strongly with 66
Spaniard Sergio Garcia scorched Augusta National on Sunday, carding the best round of the week at the U.S. Masters with a six-under 66.
However, it was too little, too late for Garcia who had left himself too much to do on the final day after opening with even par 72s and an untidy third round 75 on Saturday.
Reeling off an astonishing eight birdies in 11 holes, Garcia held the clubhouse lead at three-under 285 on the final day before ending the tournament six strokes adrift of winner Phil Mickelson.
"I just feel like I played well enough to win," said Garcia. "Unfortunately I'm not going to.
"But that's the majors. You've got to get lucky.
"A couple of good breaks could have made a big difference, unfortunately I didn't get them at the right moment."
Nonetheless, it was a remarkable effort by the Spaniard, who began the day nine back of co-leaders Phil Mickelson and Chris DiMarco and slipped two shots further adrift with a double-bogey on six.
Garcia's narrowly missed completing his round with three consecutive birdies when his undulating 38-foot putt on 18 stopped on the lip of the hole.
"It's just been a tough week. I have been playing nicely but just haven't gotten anything out of my rounds," said Garcia. "The first couple of days I shot 72 and I don't think I deserved more than a 69...at the most.
"I feel like I left a lot of shots out there that I probably didn't deserve."
