Bennett out of Open with shoulder injury

Britain's Warren Bennett has withdrawn from this week's British Open at Royal Troon because of a shoulder injury.

The 32-year-old Englishman, the leading amateur in the 1994 Open championship at Turnberry, has been replaced by compatriot Neil Evans.

Evans, the third reserve, played in local final qualifying for the third of the year's four majors at Turnberry Kintyre over the weekend.

Bennett is the fifth player to withdraw from the tournament since last week.

Japan's Toshi Izawa pulled out on Monday with a severe sinus infection, making way for Briton Ian Spencer.

Former U.S. Masters champion Fred Couples withdrew last Friday with a bad back while five-times Open champion Tom Watson withdrew on Thursday with shoulder and arm injuries.

A third American, Fred Funk, also pulled out on Thursday without giving a reason.
