Stuart Appleby leads at halfway

Australia's Stuart Appleby fired a second round six-under 66 to rocket to the top of the leaderboard at the 84 Lumber Classic on Friday, one-shot clear of American journeymen Chris Smith and Cameron Beckman.

As great a day as it was for Appleby, it was an even better one for David Toms who was released from a Pittsburgh hospital vowing he will play in next week's Presidents Cup despite being forced out of the 84 Lumber Classic with chest pains and rapid heartbeat.

Toms, ranked number 11 in the world and an 11-time winner on the PGA Tour, was taken to the hospital midway through his opening round suffering what appeared to be a heart attack.

He was later airlifted to Pittsburgh's UPMC-Presbyterian University Hospital where he was admitted in critical condition.

The 38-year-old golfer remained in hospital overnight and was released on Friday, saying on his Web site he was returning to the 84 Lumber tournament.

Toms's condition overshadowed second round play that included a near flawless performance from Appleby, who had looked headed toward an error-free round and a two stroke lead until a bogey at the last.

The stumble ruined a spectacular finish after closing with birdies on 15, 16 and 17 to send him rocketing up the leaderboard with a 36-hole total of 11-under 133.

After winning the season-opening Mercedes Championship in Hawaii, Appleby has struggled to find his best form, posting just one other top 10 result, a seventh place at the Booz Allen Classic.

"Today, was just good solid golf all day, more trying conditions than yesterday, and I just made some good putts today," said Appleby. "Of course it was more difficult; the greens were very firm, as usual, as just everything basically was a good solid day.

"I drove the ball well, hit the middle of the club face a lot of times, good club selection generally in tricky conditions, and here we are."

Beckman, still searching for his first top 20 of the year, roared into contention with a seven-under 65 that featured six birdies on his first nine to get to 10-under 134.

Smith, who has missed the cut in 16 of 25 events this season, also had a single bogey on his scorecard mixing it with five birdies and an eagle for a six-under 66 to grab a share of second.

Americans Craig Barlow (66), Joey Sindelar (68) and Sweden's Carl Pettersson lurked two shots further back on eight-under 136.

Defending champion Vijay Singh, who has been suffering from a sore back, got his day off to a blistering start with back-to-back birdies and another heading into the turn.

But the world number two struggled on his inward nine, mixing three birdies with two bogeys for a four-under 68 to leave the Fijian seven off the pace at four-under 140.

"I'm going to have to play well on the weekend," said Singh, who is in the middle of his third title defense in as many events. "I don't think the guys are going to come back.

"The golf course is tough but there's a lot of birdies out there.

"I'm playing well. I'm hitting it a little better than I did yesterday, and I can feel my putting coming back. Hopefully I can show up tomorrow with a better score."

World number three and PGA champion Phil Mickelson had another disappointing day, doing just enough to make the cut.

The world number three had a rollercoaster day, mixing five birdies with four bogeys for a one-under 71 to leave him right on the cut line of even-par 144.
