Ogilvie vaults into lead with 63

Joe Ogilvie eagled the last hole to fire a nine-under-par 63 to grab a three-stroke lead after the second round of the 90-hole Bob Hope Classic pro-am at La Quinta, California on Thursday.

Defending champion Phil Mickelson and Fredrik Jacobson of Sweden were in joint second place on 14-under 130. PGA Tour rookie Jason Allred, Fred Couples, Billy Mayfair, Robert Damron and Australian Peter Lonard tied for fourth on 131.

Ogilvie, who shared the overnight lead with four other players, had eight birdies and a bogey to go with his eagle on the par-five 18th at the Bermuda Dunes Country Club, one of four courses being used this week.

It was the third eagle in two days for Ogilvie and gave him a total of 17-under 127.

"I've had three eagles already this week and had three all 2004," said Ogilvie.

"I told the guys at my club that I'm just going to go out and shoot 40 birdies. It's just something you have to do here.

"At the U.S. Open you go out and try for 30 pars, here you need 40 birdies."

World number five Mickelson, who won here last year for the second time, enjoyed a bogey-free, eight-under 64 that included six birdies on the back nine of the La Quinta Country Club.

Jacobson produced the best round of the day, grabbing six birdies in a spectacular back nine to shoot a 10-under 62 at the Bermuda Country Club.

The red-hot Swede, who has never finished higher than third at a PGA Tour event, reeled off six birdies in seven holes from the eighth.

Canada's Mike Weir, the 2003 winner here, had another disappointing day, carding a one-over 73 for a level-par aggregate of 144.

David Duval, who hit a closing 59 to lift the title in 1999, followed his opening 10-over 82 with a seven-over 79.

There was no cut on Thursday but the professional field will be reduced to the top 70 and tied after the fourth round.
