Miguel Angel Jimenez clinches title with closing 62
Miguel Angel Jimenez eagled the 16th hole from 40 feet Sunday, carding a 7-under 62 to win the Wales Open by four strokes.
The Spanish Ryder Cup player trailed by one shot entering the final round and bogeyed his second hole. But he dropped no more shots and six birdies, plus the eagle, took him to a final total of 14-under 262.
It was Jimenez's first win of the year and second of the season -- he claimed the Hong Kong Open last December.
Sweden's Martin Erlandsson shot a 63 to share second place with Spain's Jose Manuel Lara (66).
France's Jean-Francois Lucquin was fourth after a 67. Wales' Ian Woosnam, Europe's next Ryder Cup captain, shared fifth place with Joakim Haeggman and overnight leader Alessandro Tadini.
Jimenez was especially happy with his eagle putt.
``I just tried to control the pace,'' he said. ``There was a hump in the middle and when the ball dropped in, I was delighted.''
Woosnam, by contrast, struggled on the greens.
``I missed a 4-footer on the fourth and a 14-incher on the sixth and that was it. That is so frustrating,'' Woosnam said. ``How do you deal with that? I didn't really. I was just hoping the round would end and I could get out of here.''
Woosnam later said it could be the last Wales Open he plays in with his Ryder Cup duties becoming full-time before the showdown at Ireland's K Club in September 2006.
