Browne & Brehaut tie for lead
Olin Browne and Jeff Brehaut grabbed a share of the lead while world number one Tiger Woods struggled in the second round of the $5.5 million Deutsche Bank Championship on Saturday.
Browne, who has not won a PGA Tour event since 1999, hit seven birdies in his first 10 holes en route to a six-under-par 65 which helped him tie Brehaut on nine-under 133 at the Tournament Players Club of Boston.
"I have hit the ball really solidly for the last couple of days and had enough opportunities," Browne told reporters.
"The course is playing very different from yesterday. It's playing much faster. The greens are starting to firm up."
Brehaut, who is 67th on the money list, made an eagle on the second hole and birdied the 12th, 15th and 18th as he fired a 66.
Woods, who started the day one stroke ahead of the field after an opening 65, struggled with his driver and left a number of putts short as he carded a two-over 73 for 138, four under.
"Wow, that was ugly," said Woods, who has two wins, three seconds, a third and a fourth from his last seven tournaments.
"I've got two rounds ahead of me so I'm still in the ballgame. Hopefully tomorrow I can go ahead and post another low number like I did yesterday and climb back up there."
The 29-year-old American made four bogeys and two birdies in his round.
Woods squandered a monstrous 341-yard drive at the 18th by hitting his approach shot into the deep rough to the right of the green but managed to scramble a par five.
Billy Andrade (68), Tim Petrovic (66) and Australian Robert Allenby (65) were one shot off the pace on eight-under 134.
Sweden's Carl Pettersson (67) led a group of six players on 135. Joey Sindelar (68), Briny Baird (69), Steve Lowery (69), Will MacKenzie (68) and Marco Dawson (66) were also on seven-under.
Germany's Marcel Siem tied the course record by shooting a nine-under 62 to spearhead a pack of seven players on 136 which included Jason Gore and Sweden's Jesper Parnevik.
