Dana Quigley leads after shooting 64
Dana Quigley shot a season-best 8-under 64 on Saturday to take a one-stroke lead over Loren Roberts in the Greater Hickory Classic.
The 58-year-old Quigley, a two-time winner this year who leads the Champions Tour money list with $1,812,298, had a 12-under 132 total on the Rock Barn Golf & Spa's Jones Course. Roberts, the Jeld-Wen Tradition winner in August, had a 65.
``It should be a good shootout tomorrow,'' Quigley said. ``The conditions were good today. The greens were really soft, which plays into my game. I'll see how the greens are holding up the first few holes (Sunday), and go from there.''
Jay Haas (67), Jim Ahern (66) and Tom McKnight (68) were 9 under, and Brad Bryant (67) and Lonnie Nielsen (70) were another stroke back.
Conditions on the 7,093-yard course were dramatically different from Friday, when play was suspended because of wet conditions.
According to tournament officials, 5 1/2 inches of rain fell on the course in a two-day period, including 2.4 inches Friday. But the showers stopped early Saturday, with sunshine occasionally peeking through the remaining clouds.
``I was just amazed at how good the course was, just incredible the shape it was in with all the rain,'' Roberts said. ``I only had to take casual water relief twice, and the greens held up very well.''
Quigley and Roberts both finished the rain-delayed first round, which was completed Saturday morning, at 68. But Quigley moved ahead with eight birdies, including a 70-foot putt on the par-3 third hole.
``I just stuffed a lot of shots close that normally would run 10-15 feet past the pin,'' Quigley said.
``I get a lot more confident when I know that ball is gonna stop.'' Roberts had a chance to tie Quigley on the par-5 18th hole, but he pulled his second shot into the gallery and was forced to take a drop, then missed a 6-foot birdie putt.
``I left some out there -- I could've birdied every hole on the front nine, and I didn't hit the ball as well on the back nine,'' Roberts said.
``We'll see what happens on Sunday.'' Craig Stadler, the 2003 winner, shot a 67 to join John Bland (68), Tom Wargo (66) and Wayne Levi (72) at 7 under.
Defending tournament champion Doug Tewell, who held the clubhouse lead at 2 under when play was suspended Friday, shot a 72 Saturday for 2-under total.
