Jay Haas gains first senior vivtory

Jay Haas got hot at the right time and picked up his first Champions Tour victory.

Haas fired a 7-under-par 65 that included five birdies on his final seven holes to post a two-shot victory at the $1.6 million Greater Hickory Classic.

Splitting his time this season between the PGA and Champions Tours, Haas was playing in just seventh senior circuit event of 2005 and entered Sunday three shots off the lead.

He fired eight birdies and just one bogey to get to 16-under 202, two shots ahead of Dana Quigley, and earn $240,000.

"It's a great feeling to win again," Haas said. "My whole game hasn't been sharp this year but this week it was. I had a very good ball-striking week."

Haas birdied three of his first seven holes and suffered his lone bogey on the 7,087-yard, par-72 layout at No. 9. He started his back nine with a pair of pars before back-to-back birdies at 12 and 13. Three birdies in a row to close out his round capped the win.

"I knew I had to make some birdies coming in," Haas said. "I made the putts I needed to today. the course was set up good for my game."

Quigley started his final round with a one-shot lead at 12-under but managed just three birdies and a bogey Sunday and finished at 14-under 202.

"I didn't have it today," Quigley said. "I tried to talk myself into being more aggressive but I didn't play as well as I had the previous two days."

Looking for his third win of the season, Quigley was unable to make a move on the back nine, carding eight consecutive pars before a closing birdie.

Loren Roberts also signed for a 70 and finished third at 13-under.

Roberts got off to a good start with birdies on his first two holes and he added another on the fifth. The par-4 sixth proved to be his undoing as he carded a triple-bogey that ended his title hopes.

"One bad swing just happened on that hole," Roberts said of the sixth. "I played well but my putter let me down. Birdies were out there and I just didn't convert."
