Steve Webster gains maiden European Tour win

England's Steve Webster finally landed his maiden European tour win after firing a final round four-under 68 to win by three shots on an 18-under total of 270 at the Italian Open.

Webster, who has been runner-up five times, started the day one stroke ahead of compatriot Richard Finch.

Having birdied his opening hole of the final round Webster wobbled slightly when dropping shots at the third and the eighth hole.

However the Englishman recovered his composure to pick up four shots in his next seven holes to take full control before sealing victory with his sixth birdie of the day at the 17th.

"To win is amazing really. I started the week pretty confident, but you never know until the weekend," beamed Webster afterwards.

"My mind was all over the place today, I did feel I was going to win, but it's so hard to keep concentrating."

"Of course I've under-achieved on tour. Ten years is a long time and when I look at players who have done well - no names mentioned - I know I am better than them."

Denmark's Anders Hansen finished in joint-second after carding a best of the day 66, although he was a touch unlucky to see his 25-foot birdie putt on the last shave the hole.

Welshman Bradley Dredge found water with his tee-shot on the last hole and a bogey dropped him back into a share of second place.

Richard Finch was also three strokes behind Webster, courtesy of five birdies in his last 10 holes for a fourth round 70.
