Paul Broadhurst leads into the weekend
Britain's Paul Broadhurst will take a one-shot lead over Spain's Jose Maria Olazabal, the hosting Pula course architect, into Saturday's Majorca Classic third round.
The two former Ryder Cup players found vintage form but Broadhurst, shooting a four-under-par 66 to move to seven-under-par 133, was five strokes ahead of the field until double-bogeying the 14th.
Olazabal is aiming for his first win for three years either side of the Atlantic and gave himself a chance to end his drought by shooting a 65 to finish a stroke ahead of France's Gregory Havret.
While Olazabal seeks to get back to the winner's enclosure, Broadhurst is trying for his second win of the season after winning the Portuguese Open in April, his first victory in 10 years.
Like his week on the Algarve, where he took advantage of late collapses by fellow Britons Barry Lane and Paul Lawrie, Broadhurst came to Majorca with little expectation and his game in no great shape.
After a chequered first round 67, though, and with the help of his coach, who spotted where he was going wrong while watching the tournament on television, Broadhurst is again contending.
"It's funny how it happens, said Broadhurst after a round containing seven birdies in 10 holes from the third.
"One day I can't hit the ball and the next I'm leading the tournament."
A win on the course he has been redesigning for three years would be welcome, said Olazabal.
"It would be a thrill after three years without a win to win anywhere but it would be very special to win here.
"This is now a tough course, especially the back nine.
"But when we finish, hopefully the opinion will be that the course was tough but fair."
It is Olazabal's third attempt at winning. In 2003 he went out of bounds at the 17th in the final round to hand fellow-Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez the title and last year finished 10th behind Sergio Garcia.
Havret edged a stroke in front of the group on four-under with a 66, to aim for his second full tour title.
His compatriot Gregory Bourdy had been just one of several players who have to worry about being overtaken on the money-list on Sunday and losing their cards.
However, Bourdy, who was holding 116th and last place to qualify for a card for next year, missed the cut and will now be overtaken for certain.
