Briny Baird holds on to two shot lead
A hole-in-one helped Briny Baird to a second round five-under 66 and a two-stroke lead at the Las Vegas championships on Friday, while world number three Phil Mickelson failed to make the cut for the first time this season.
Baird, who began the day with a two-shot cushion after a course record-equalling 10-under 62 at the TCP at Summerlin on Thursday, got his round off to another sizzling start with four birdies on his first six holes.
Battling to be among the top 125 on the PGA Tour list to secure his tour card for next season, Baird stumbled into the turn with bogeys at nine and 10, but recovered in style with an ace at the par-three 12 at the TPC at the Canyons, one of two courses being used for the $4 million event.
The unheralded American added another birdie at the 14th before closing with four consecutive pars to sit on 15-under 128 for the tournament, two shots clear of Japan's Shigeki Maruyama and compatriots Paul Goydos and Bart Bryant, Kevin Stadler and Ryan Moore.
Goydos, playing at Summerlin, was also off to a flying start with five birdies on his outward nine, including four straight from the fourth on his way to a flawless seven-under 65.
Bryant, a winner earlier this season at the Memorial, enjoyed a second consecutive error-free day signing for a five-under 66 to join Goydos at 13-under 130.
Moore, the highly rated rookie who attended university at nearby UNLV and turned professional following the U.S. Open, also had a flawless day that included a blistering first nine featuring six birdies to return the joint best round of the day with an eight-under 63.
Stadler, another tour rookie, mixed four birdies with an eagle and a bogey for a five-under 66.
Harrison Frazar and Australia's Rod Pampling has signed for eight-under to sit one shot further adrift at 12-under 131.
Mickelson, who has had disappointing results since winning the PGA championship in August, was unable to find his form in the Nevada desert failing to make the cut for the first time this season.
A four-time winner this season, Mickelson had a rollercoaster day at the TPC at Summerlin mixing six birdies with three bogeys and a double bogey for a one-under 71 and a two-day total of five-under 138 missing the cut by a single stroke.
John Daly, who lost in a playoff to Tiger Woods last weekend at the WGC American Express championships, had also been in danger of missing the cut but returned a five-under 67 to join a large group of 15 players at eight-under 135.
