Nicklaus & Watson paired together

Jack Nicklaus has been placed with Tom Watson, one of his biggest rivals from a glittering career, for his final British Open appearance at the Old Course this week.

Their "duel in the sun" for the 1977 at Turnberry, eventually won by Watson, was one of the greatest showdowns in Open history. Up-and-coming Briton Luke Donald completes the trio for the first two rounds on Thursday and Friday.

Tournament favourite Tiger Woods, who won the last time the Open was staged at St Andrews in 2000, has been drawn with Spain's Jose Maria Olazabal and Australian Robert Allenby.

American Todd Hamilton will embark on the defence of his title with British Ryder Cup player Lee Westwood and twice-U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen of South Africa.

Most eyes, though, will be on 65-year-old Nicklaus, who made his debut in golf's oldest major in 1962 and is retiring after this week's event.

Nicklaus is determined to play all four rounds. "I want to finish my career on a Sunday, not a Friday," said the American who has won 18 major titles, including three British Opens. He won at St Andrews in 1970 and 1978.

"There isn't a better place for me to go out. St Andrews is one of my two favourite golf places in the world. The other is Augusta and it's fitting that my last two majors should be in Augusta back in April and now St Andrews."

He will begin his final challenge at 0747 local time (0647 GMT) with Watson and Donald.

Ernie Els, the Open winner in 2002, and runner-up in a play-off with Hamilton last year at Troon, plays with in-form Darren Clarke, who tied for second place in the Scottish Open at the weekend, and American Fred Funk.
