Bernard Langer earns late Open call up
Former Ryder Cup captain Bernhard Langer and Fredrik Jacobson won late call-ups to play in the 134th British Open on Monday after two players pulled out with injury.
German Langer, who steered Europe to victory over the United States in the Ryder Cup last September, booked his 27th Open appearance after Japan's Shingo Katayama pulled out with injury, the Royal and Ancient (R&A) said.
American Jay Haas also scratched from the tournament, which starts on Thursday at St Andrews, paving the way for Swede Jacobson to play.
Langer, 47, has a strong record in the event, finishing second in 1984 here to Seve Ballesteros. He was also runner-up to American Bill Rogers in 1981 at Sandwich and has finished third four times.
