Ian Poulter makes splash with trousers

Golfing fashion king Ian Poulter's sartorial sense once again set him a class apart at the British Open on Thursday.

The Briton followed up last year's Union Jack trousers with a pair of bright blue flairs which bore an image of the famous Open Claret Jug on one leg and a roll of honour of Open champions on the other.

They were the result of a BBC Online website competition for its viewers to design something eye-catching for the clothes horse of the links to wear on day one of the world's oldest major tournament.

Ben Gallop, editor of BBC Sport Interactive, told Reuters that 2,000 had entered the competition which was launched in May.

"We were simply amazed that so many, adults and children wanted to design for Ian. It really caught their imagination," he said.

The Claret Jug trousers, tailored by William Hunt of London's Savile Row, were the brainchild of a graphic designer, Gavin Adams, from Oxfordshire in central England.

"I've been wearing what I would say are 'different' trousers for the past 18 months and the competition was a fantastic idea to get the general public involved. I couldn't wait to wear them," said Poulter.
