Solid Vijay Singh stays in touch
Vijay Singh kept in touch with Tiger Woods at the top of the British Open leaderboard following a second successive round of 69 on Friday.
The Fijian world number two, who has traded places with Woods at the top of the rankings, produced a near-flawless round and would have moved clear of the field if he had converted more of his birdie opportunities.
Singh birdied the first, ninth and 14th holes but failed to take full advantage of magnificent iron play as he finished at six under par, tied for the early clubhouse lead with South African Trevor Immelman.
"I am happy enough with my position but disappointed with the way I scored," Singh told reporters. "I left a lot of shots out there but that's golf. You make some, you miss some, hopefully over the weekend I can make some."
Singh has won the U.S. Masters and two U.S. PGA Championships and, after finishing tied for second place in the 2003 Open at Royal St George's, has his sights set on winning all four majors in his career.
"It would be nice to get it but that's why there are not many people who have made it," he said. "It's one of the hardest things to do."
Singh believes he is playing well enough to win the tournament. "I'm in a very good position to do it. I'm playing well, I'm very patient and I'll just go out and play the course."
Singh finished his second round tied with Woods at the top of the leaderboard but the American was drawing away from the field again early in his second round.
"If Tiger shoots nine or 10 under today we may all be playing for second place but you never know," Singh said.
"I'll just go out and play my game and shoot as low as possible over the weekend."
