Inspired finish from Nick Faldo
Nick Faldo completed his final round in spectacular fashion to finish on six under par at the British Open on Sunday.
The six-times major champion birdied the notorious 17th Road Hole before holing a huge, snaking putt for eagle on the 18th green to card a closing 69.
"On 17 you make three there every decade, just about," the 47-year-old Englishman told reporters. "I can only think of making a three there once. I knew a three would give me a lovely lift.
"Then I came to the last. It's crazy how I looked at that putt from behind the hole and I thought 'I fancy this one' and I knocked it in dead centre. It doesn't make any sense, so I'm chuffed."
Faldo began his bid for a fourth Open title with rounds of 74, 69 and 70 and generally struggled on the greens, but three birdies round the turn offset three bogeys before his inspired finish delighted the huge crowds at the home of golf.
"I've had a great week, it's been absolutely fantastic," he said.
Faldo won the 1990 Open at St Andrews when he was world number one.
"It's a very special place, I'm delighted with the way things went this week, it's been pretty unexpected," he added.
