Curtis Strange moved into position for his first Champions Tour victory, shooting a 6-under 66 in windy conditions Saturday to take a three-stroke lead over David Edwards in the Champions Tour's 3M Championship.
Strange, the two-time U.S. Open champion in his second season on the 50-and-over tour, had a 10-under 134 total on the TPC Twin Cities. He was 6 under overall through 13 holes before making his move with birdies on four of the last five holes.
Edwards, a tour rookie seeking his first Champions Tour victory, finished with a 68, just missing a 12-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole. He birdied three of his first six holes, but had just one more the rest of the way.
Craig Stadler, who finished second in each of the last two years, was four strokes back after a 67. Morris Hatalsky (66) also was 6 under.
With the wind gusting to 25 mph, Stadler shot a 30 on the front nine, including six straight birdies. A three-putt at 17 dropped him to 5 under, but he rebounded with a birdie on 18 after just missing a 15-foot eagle putt.
Hatalsky shot a 31 on the front nine, including birdies on four of five holes.
Brad Bryant (70), Bruce Fleisher (69), Hale Irwin (70), former major league pitcher Rick Rhoden (67), Loren Roberts (70) and D.A. Weibring (69) were 5 under, and first-round leader Andy Bean (73) was another stroke back.
Defending champion Tom Purtzer, one back to start the day, shot a 74 to drop eight strokes behind at 2 under.
