Cesar Monasterio claims maiden tour win

Argentine Cesar Monasterio came from five strokes back to win the St Omer Open on Sunday and claim his first European tour title.

Monasterio, 42, closed with a four-under-par 67 to total a 10-under-par 274, a stroke ahead of overnight leader Henrik Nystrom of Sweden and South African Martin Maritz.

Promotion from the Challenge tour to the full European circuit and a one-year exemption for the 2007 season, accompanied a $84,000 dollars first prize for Monasterio, who began the day five shots behind Nystrom.

After Nystrom forfeited his overnight two-stroke lead over the field with an opening double-bogey, Montasterio and Maritz became favourites for the title.

An eagle at the seventh, sandwiched between two birdies, took Montasterio to the top of the leaderboard and he stayed just ahead of Maritz until bogeying the 16th.

Playing ahead, Montasterio then set the target of 10-under by getting up and down from the greenside bunker at 18 and when Maritz also bogeyed 16 to close with a 71, the title went to the Argentine.
