Chris DiMarco, crushed 6&5 by fellow American David Toms in last year's WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship final, believes he can go one better this week.
Boosted by five consecutive birdies, DiMarco booked his place in the last 16 with a 6&5 victory over compatriot Arron Oberholser in Thursday's second round at La Costa Resort and Spa.
Ryder Cup player DiMarco picked up six shots overall and never trailed after Oberholser bogeyed the opening hole.
"I think this is the first time I've ever done that to somebody, so it was nice," the 37-year-old told reporters after winning the first match of the day.
"He wasn't feeling real good, and he made a few bogeys early to help me out.
"He kind of ran into me playing some really good golf and I think he was overtired from the week.
"I like my chances here because I know how competitive I am," added DiMarco, who won the inaugural Abu Dhabi Golf Championship on the European Tour last month.
"I know that it's going to be hard to play somebody as competitive as me.
"There might be guys that are better than me but, as far as competitiveness and never giving up and always fighting and clawing, I don't think there are too many guys that have that."
Three up at the turn against Oberholser, DiMarco hit a wedge approach to nine feet to birdie the par-four 10th and go four up.
He reached the green in two at the par-five 11th to set up another, matched Oberholser's birdie on 12 and sealed victory when he rifled his approach to five feet at the par-four 13th.
"Any win is a good win and I definitely played a lot better today than yesterday," said DiMarco, who knocked out Mark Calcavecchia 2&1 on the opening day.
"I did not hit it in the rough once today, and that's the key out here. I hit a lot of really good quality drives and kept putting myself in play, and not in bogey positions.
"I'm starting to really enjoy the golf course. I'm still cutting it a little bit off the tee, which is good for this course."
DiMarco faces his Ryder Cup team mate Davis Love III in the third round.
