GREAT GIFTS FOR GOLFERS

Geoff Ogilvy fortunate to reach final two

Australian Geoff Ogilvy will square off with American Davis Love in the final of the Match Play Championship in California.

Ogilvy staged another fight-back from the brink to beat Englishman David Howell in 19 holes in his quarter-final and then beat veteran American Tom Lehmann 4 and 3 in the semi-finals to reach the 36-hole final.

Love had a steadier path the final, beating Irishman Padraig Harrington 1-up in the first round on Saturday and then compatriot Zach Johnson 4 and 2 in the second semi-final.

Ogilvy is hoping to become only the second Australian to claim an individual World Golf Championships after Craig Parry.

But he is fortunate just to be in the final after winning his match against Howell on the first extra hole.

He won the hole with a 19-foot birdie putt to advance to the semis, where he stretched three ahead of Lehman after a pair of birdies on the fourth and fifth and then capitalising on a his challenger's bogey on the sixth.

Lehman then bogeyed the ninth but rallied to win the 12th hole after putting his tee shot just three feet from the cup.

Ogilvy countered with another 19-foot birdie putt on the 14th and wrapped up the victory on the following hole.

"It's ridiculous really," Ogilvy told AFP . "Three or four times this week, every match, I've thought 'I'm in a bit of trouble'. I never gave up but I would have put money on the other guy a couple of times."

"So far, everything's turned out in my favour and I've come up with the shots when I've needed them. I've made some nice putts when I've needed."

"It will even out one day but it's nice it's not evening out yet."

Meanwhile, Love holed an eagle from 100m at the 18th to edge Harrington in his quarter-final and was then took early charge against Johnson in the semis, with four birdies on the front nine.

Johnson compounded his problems when he found water on the eighth, allowing Love holed to forge ahead with a birdie.

He doubled his lead at the ninth and went four up at the 14th with a 23-foot birdie putt.
