With a record-setting round, Jay Haas continued his surge towards the top spot in the Charles Schwab Cup standings.
Haas fired a tournament-record 9-under-par 63 in the second round at the $1.6 million Administaff Small Business Classic to take a commanding five-stroke lead Saturday at Augusta Pines Golf Club.
Haas entered this tournament 84 points behind Loren Roberts for the lead in the year-long points race with three events remaining. The top 30 finishers qualify for the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship later this month, where triple points will be available.
Roberts is tied for 16th here at 5-under-par 139.
Haas played his second bogey-free round of the tournament and signed for nine birdies, completing the round at 16-under 128 - another tournament record for 36-holes. He fired a sizzling 30 on the back nine, closing with four consecutive birdies.
Haas' five-stroke advantage is the largest on tour after two rounds since Jim Ahern had a six-shot lead after 36 holes of the 2003 Music City Championship in Nashville.
Extending his streak of holes without a bogey to 57, Haas is the only player who has played bogey-free golf here the last two years. He is 18 holes away from his sixth career triumph and fourth of the year, which would tie Roberts for the season lead.
Bruce Lietzke shot a 6-under 66 to move to 11-under and five shots back. He is tied with first-round co-leader Tom Purtzer (68).
Dick Mast, who shared the opening-round lead with Purtzer, is six strokes off the pace after a 3-under 69.
Defending champion Mark McNulty is tied for 32nd at 3-under, while Tom Kite resides in a tie for 66th at 3-over-par. Kite never has won in 103 career tournaments played in his native Texas, including 12 on the elder circuit.
Golfing legend Arnold Palmer withdrew from the event Friday. The 77-year-old was making just his third competitive appearance this year and shot a 43-over 259 at last month's Constellation Energy Classic.
