Jay Haas wins as final day is rained out

After a record-setting round, Jay Haas got an unexpected day off.

Haas fired a tournament-record 9-under-par 63 in the second round at the $1.6 million Administaff Small Business Classic, but it was enough to give him the title after Sunday's final round was cancelled due to rain.

Haas started the round with a five-shot lead and was at 17-under through five holes on Sunday when the Augusta Pines Golf Club course was declared unplayable.

"I don't think I lucked into this one," Haas said. "I was playing really well but it was clear to all of us that if we got much more rain we'd be done."

The win marked the sixth career Champions Tour title and fouth of the season for Haas, who vaulted past Loren Roberts into first place in the Charles Schwab Cup race.

"I'm happy to be back atop the Charles Schwab Cup standings," Haas said. "He can chase me now. I've been chasing him for a while."

Haas finished with a 36-hole total of 16-under 128. Bruce Lietzke and Tom Purtzer tied for second place at 11-under 133.

"It is easy to see one guy was dominating the field," Lietzke said. "It was Jay's tournament and I'm happy with second place."

It was the second week in a row a Champions Tour event ended after two rounds. Tom Jenkins won his seventh career Champions Tour victory in the rain-shortened SAS Championship last week.

Haas would have been tough to catch even if rain had not intervened. His five-stroke advantage was the largest on tour after two rounds since Jim Ahern had a six-shot lead after 36 holes of the 2003 Music City Championship in Nashville.

Haas earned $240,000 for the win and now has a 156-point lead over Roberts in the Schwab Cup race.
