Jesper Parnevik surprise at late surge

Sweden's Jesper Parnevik was in disbelief on Sunday after coming close to winning his sixth PGA Tour title at the Bob Hope Classic.

The 39-year-old from Stockholm had been sure he was destined to miss the fourth-round cut after lying four under in the 90-hole event towards the end of the third day.

However, the 2000 champion rallied in style, closing rounds of 62 and 67 lifting him into a tie for second place, three strokes behind winner Chad Campbell.

"It was amazing to actually have a chance to win today," Parnevik told reporters after finishing on 22-under 338 at the Classic Club.

"I was four under par with three holes to go in the third round and thinking about where I was going to spend Sunday, because I was putting so bad.

"It felt like I was three-putting every other hole. But I finished with three birdies on Friday, then missed a short birdie on one straight off the bat in round four and I thought: 'Here we go again.'

"Then I shoot 10 under after that."

Parnevik's 62 was a course record at the Classic Club and equalled his lowest score on the PGA Tour in the final round of the 1997 Bob Hope Classic.

Without a victory since the 2001 Honda Classic, the Ryder Cup veteran is determined to return to the winner's circle but is frustrated hard work does not always reap just reward in golf.

"I've been working very hard the last couple of years to get back in the winner's circle, back on top in the world again," he said.

"But in golf you never know. I think it's the only sport where you can work 10 times harder than you ever have and you get 10 times worse than you ever did.

"In most other sports, when you put the time in, you get better. But golf is not that way."
