Bobby Wadkins holds on to lead

Bobby Wadkins found it a little tougher going in the second round of the Boeing Championship. He still finds himself in good position for his second Champions Tour win.

After a bogey-free round of 62 on Friday, Wadkins battled to an even-par 71 in Saturday's second round and has a three-shot lead at the $1.6 million event.

In search of his first win since the 2001 Long Island Classic, Wadkins entered the day with a four-stroke cushion but managed only three birdies which were offset with three bogeys.

At 9-under 133, Wadkins has a three-shot lead over Craig Stadler and John Harris.

After five pars to start the round, Wadkins finally carded his first bogey at the par-3 sixth. He bounced back with consecutive birdies at Nos. 7 and 8 but had just one more birdie on his final 10 holes.

"By no means can I go out there and think even-par will win the golf tournament," Wadkins said. "I just want to go play good golf and see what happens."

Stadler signed for a 6-under 65 that included eight birdies. His final birdie came at the 16th but he followed it up with a double-bogey at the par-5 17th to drop back into a tie for second and give Wadkins a little more breathing room.

"I never know when it's going to happen," Stadler said. "I hit a lot of good shots out there today and then I just hit it 50 yards off line. I never know when it is going to happen. I hit it 50 yards dead left and I never do that.

"I bet I've made 25 (double-bogeys) this year. I made five all last year. I even hit it out of bounds and I haven't hit it out of bounds in five years."

Harris signed for a bogey-free 66 to join Stadler at 6-under 136.

Loren Roberts (68) and Curtis Strange (71) are tied for fourth at 5-under.

Defending champion Jim Thorpe, who won in a playoff last year, bounced back from an opening 75 with a 69 and is 11 shots back.

First prize is $240,000.
