Sergio Garcia looking forward to Tiger Woods battle
Sergio Garcia, lifted by an improvement in his putting, goes into the final round of the Buick Invitational with his sights set on a seventh PGA Tour victory.
The Spaniard fired a four-under-par 68 in Saturday's third round at Torrey Pines to finish tied for the lead with Australian Rod Pampling at 11-under 205.
Garcia is also looking forward to playing in the final group on Sunday with three-times winner Tiger Woods, who finished a shot behind the lead duo in a share of third place after shooting a best-of-the-day 67.
"It's going to be a fun day and by no means easy," the 26-year-old Garcia told reporters after recovering from a double-bogey at the second hole with six birdies over the closing stretch.
"I played the first couple of days with him (Woods) and enjoyed it quite a bit. I'm looking forward to what we can do tomorrow.
"I've always enjoyed competition and playing against the best. That's why I came here to the U.S. to play on this tour."
Garcia, whose last PGA Tour victory came at the 2005 Booz Allen Classic, is delighted his perennial putting problems appear to be over.
He holed out several times for birdie from between five and 10 feet on Saturday, and also made a monster birdie putt from 60 feet at the par-four 12th.
"My putting is starting to come around," said the world number six. "I'm finally feeling the most comfortable I've felt for quite a while.
"I stand over them thinking I'm going to make them, so that's a big difference."
Garcia, who burst on to the world scene by finishing runner-up to Woods in the 1999 U.S. PGA championship, is among the best players in the game yet to win a major.
He has collected 10 top-10 finishes in 26 major starts but says he is not putting himself under any added pressure to break through.
"I've been doing a lot of good work and it's just a matter of giving yourself chances and hopefully breaking through on one of those," he said.
"I'm not going to put any extra pressure on myself to do anything. I just want to keep playing well and hopefully win one soon."
