Unheralded American Charley Hoffman recovered from a stuttering start to grab the third-round lead at the rain-hit Las Vegas Open on Saturday.
Playing the back nine first at the TPC Summerlin course, Hoffman got his round off to a shaky start with bogeys on his opening two holes.
But in a spectacular turn-around, Hoffman hit back with birdies on five of his next six holes to reach the turn at three-under.
The American, whose best PGA Tour finish was a tie for eighth, carried on the momentum with birdies at the first, third and fifth to get to 17-under before play was halted due to fading light with four holes to play. Hoffman held one shot lead over compatriot Troy Matteson.
Matteson mixed six birdies with a single bogey to sit on 16-under with six to play.
A long day in the Nevada desert began with players completing the second round but not before waiting out another lengthy delay as another storm swept across the area, suspending the start of play.
Daniel Chopra was one of few players to complete the third round, grabbing the clubhouse lead at 15-under 200 after carding a bogey-free eight-under 64.
The Swede, who has five top-10 finishes this season including a sixth at last week's Greensboro Open, was joined at 15-under by American Bill Haas and Japan's Shigeki Maruyama, who have four and five holes to complete.
World number two Jim Furyk, three-times a winner in Las Vegas and the highest ranked player in the field, struggled to a two-under 70 to finish eight off the pace at nine-under 206.
Second-round leader D.A. Points joined a group at 14-under that also includes Ben Crane, Duffy Waldorf, Tom Pernice and Kevin Sutherland.
