Jean Van de Velde had five birdies and an eagle for a 7-under 65 Friday, sharing a three-stroke lead with Jarmo Sandelin after two rounds of the Madeira Island Open.
Sandelin of Sweden had a 68, matching the Frenchman at 10-under 134.
Sandelin opened Thursday's round with a 66 for a two-stroke lead, but was more cautious on the second day.
"I am trying to stay calm and not be too offensive," the five-time European Tour winner said. "To be honest I cannot remember the last time I walked off with a 68 and felt it could have been lower."
Five players were tied at 7 under -- Nicolas Colsaerts (67), Bradley Dredge (65), Paul Lawrie (69), Damien McGrane (69) and Garry Houston (69).
