RYDER CUP DAY ONE STORIES

Ian Woosnam plays everyone on first day

Ian Woosnam decided on Wednesday that he would give all his players a taste of the Ryder Cup on the opening day and after taking a two-shot lead Europe's captain may decide to repeat the tactic on Saturday.

"They all played well, every single one of them, and played with fantastic spirit," Woosnam told a news conference after Europe ended the day 5-3 ahead.

"It is difficult to come here with a set plan but I decided on Wednesday I was going to play everybody today.

"It would be nice to do that again but it all depends what happens in the morning."

Woosnam's theory that "anybody can beat anybody in matchplay," was born out by his opposite number Tom Lehman's two top pairings - Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk and Phil Mickelson and Chris DiMarco - making only one and a half points out of four.

"That result puts them (the European players) in great spirit and proves they're not frightened of anybody," Woosnam said.

With seven out of the eight matches going to the final hole, though, the Europe captain warned against over-confidence.

"Any one of the games could have changed and gone the other way," he said. "I think you're going to see a lot more matches coming down the 18th."

Woosnam picked out Colin Montgomerie, who ensured the two-point advantage for his team by holing a five-footer to win the last and square his afternoon foursomes, for special praise.

"He's got such courage. What a man to have on your team," he said.

Europe's captain is wary of passing on too much on-course advice after a mishap with Robert Karlsson in the morning, when the Swede overshot the seventh green and sent his ball on to the top platform of a TV tower.

He explained: "I only gave a little bit of advice on one hole and he ended up on a TV tower, so I thought I'd better keep my mouth shut.

"I'd seen players were coming up short so I suggested one to a half a club more and Robert obviously went with one club more. He did brilliantly to save par."
