Chad Campbell upset at missed opportunities

Chad Campbell could only rue a day of disappointment after tying for second behind winner David Toms at the Sony Open on Sunday.

The pair had been locked in a tie for the lead going into the final round at Waialae Country Club but Campbell struggled to a level-par 70 while fellow American Toms cruised to a five-shot victory with a closing 65.

"It was a disappointing day, I really played terribly," a frustrated Campbell told reporters after finishing on 14-under 266, level with South Africa's Rory Sabbatini.

"David played good. I never put any pressure on him to make him do anything, but he played solid. 65 in the final round, that's pretty good golf.

"I just didn't hit the ball well, didn't putt well. I didn't do much of anything well," added the 31-year-old Texan, who is known for his attacking style and ability to hit fairways and greens. "That's the way it goes sometimes."

Toms and Campbell had turned the second event on the 2006 PGA Tour into a two-horse race on Saturday after firing sparkling rounds of 61 and 62, Toms setting a tournament record with his nine-under total.

Campbell, however, failed to reproduce his superb form on the last day, registering a single birdie at the par-three 17th.

"I didn't know if I was going to make one (a birdie) today or not," he said. "Finally I got one on 17.

"Still, it's not a bad start to the year so hopefully I'll be able to get it done (win) the next few weeks."

Campbell, who finished runner-up to Shaun Micheel in the 2003 U.S. PGA Championship at Oak Hill, has won twice on the PGA Tour.

He clinched his maiden title at the 2003 Tour Championship in Houston and followed up with a six-shot victory at the 2004 Bay Hill Invitational.
