GREAT GIFTS FOR GOLFERS

Vijay Singh quietly moves up the leaderboard

Through three rounds of the U.S. Open there has been little talk of Vijay Singh and the world number three has not had much to say either.

Flying below the radar much of the week, the three-time major winner suddenly popped up on the leaderboard on Saturday with an even-par 70 to sit just three shots back of co-leaders Phil Mickelson and Kenneth Ferrie heading into final round play.

Despite posting top 10 finishes in all four majors last year and coming off his first win in 10 months last week at the Barclays Classic, little attention has been paid to the Fijian as he quietly went about his business at Winged Foot Golf Club.

Never one to seek out the spotlight, it has been easy to avoid at the U.S. Open with most of the focus falling on Tiger Woods' return to action following the death of his father and Phil Mickelson's bid for a third consecutive major.

But on Sunday, Singh will not so easily dismiss the attention as he did the media most of the week, briskly walking past waiting reporters and television cameras on his way to the driving range.

Concentrating on recovering the form that had carried him to the top of the world rankings, the hard-working Fijian has very little time for questions.

However, Singh, whose best U.S. Open finish was a tie for third in 1999 at Pinehurst, did say early in the week that he was starting to feel confident in his game again following his victory at the Barclays.

"I've taken a lot of confidence from there," Singh told reporters. "I'm not on a high but my golf game just kind of lifted to a level where I feel a lot more at ease playing right now.

"Just the satisfaction of practising so hard and pulling it off. The whole team worked pretty hard in getting back to where I should be."
