GREAT GIFTS FOR GOLFERS

Tom Kite jumps into lead with 65

Tom Kite has been playing really good golf lately. It was the same Saturday as he moved into position for his third win of the season.

Kite fired a 7-under-par 65 and climbed to the top of the leaderboard after the second round of the Champions Tour's $2 million First Tee Open.

Since finishing tied for 55th at the U.S. Senior Open, Kite has been in a zone. He has five top-10s since, including a win at the Seattle Classic two weeks ago.

Starting his round on the 10th hole of the Del Monte Golf Course, Kite began with a birdie and had four more on his first nine, offsetting a bogey at 16. He carded three more birdies coming in to get to 10-under 134.

Kite is one shot in front of Jay Haas and D.A. Weibring. Haas signed for a 69 while Weibring, who entered Saturday with a two-shot lead, had an erratic 71.

Haas started the second round tied for second and got off to a fast start. He birdied the first hole and added three consecutive birdies starting on No. 4. Haas cooled off thereafter and had 11 pars and a bogey after a birdie at No. 6.

Weibring has yet to win on the Champions Tour this season despite six top-10 finishes. He took the first step toward that elusive victory with a 64 on Friday at Del Monte but was not as sharp Saturday at the Pebble Beach course.

The 53-year-old Weibring bogeyed Nos. 12 and 14 before settling down. He birdied 18 and started his final nine with two straight birdies before running into trouble.

A double-bogey at the par-4 third was followed by a bogey at the fifth. Birdies at Nos. 6, 7 and 9 salvaged the round and earned him a share of second.

Eduardo Romero of Argentina, who won last week's Tradition, carded a 67 and is among a group of five at 8-under 136 including Dan Pohl (67), Mike McCullough (68), Scott Simpson (69) and Tom Purtzer (70).

Defending champion Hale Irwin, who like Weibring is winless this year, is tied for 23rd at 4-under after a round of 69.
