Ernie Els vaults into lead with a 64

World number five Ernie Els fired an eight-under-par 64 to seize control of the Dunhill Championship after the third round on Saturday.

The rest of the field have been left behind by Els's masterclass, save for Briton Lee Slattery, who shot a 67 to finish two strokes adrift at the Leopard Creek Country Club.

Els made eight birdies and did not drop a shot as he finished the third round on 13-under-par overall.

"I played well today, the way I wanted to. That's the round I've been looking for for a while," Els told reporters.

"I was disappointed with my finish yesterday, it wasn't great, but I made a good start today with two birdies and then another at six. And I played nicely coming in too."

Slattery played superbly from tee to green to finish with six birdies and a solitary drop, at the par-four ninth, when he played his drive with too much draw.

Dutchman Joost Luiten made the most telling charge of the third day, also shooting a 64, which included a hole-in-one at the 176-metre par-three 12th hole, to finish on six-under-par overall, after ending the second round on the cut mark of two-over.

Briton Oliver Wilson also shot a hole-in-one, on the 190-metre par-three 16th, as he finished on four-under-par.

Britain's Ross McGowan (67) and John Bickerton (68) are in third place on nine-under-par.

Els said he would not be looking out for potential challengers in Sunday's final round.

"You have to play your own game and I can't worry about the lead. I won't be playing in any different way tomorrow," Els said.

Els began the round three strokes behind overnight leader Omar Sandys, but had caught up by the turn and a 40-foot putt for birdie on the 10th gave him the outright lead. He continued to produce faultless golf through to the 18th, birdying the 12th, 13th, 15th and 18th holes.

Sandys, a Sunshine Tour journeyman, has slipped back into a tie for fifth place, seven shots adrift, after a difficult round of 74, which included double-bogeys at the first and ninth holes.

Prizemoney of 158,500 euros ($230,700) will be paid to this year's winner of the co-sanctioned European Tour and Sunshine Tour event.
