Mads Vibe-Hastrup vault into lead with round of 63
Mads Vibe-Hastrup is bidding for a Danish double after taking the second-round lead at the Wales Open on Friday.
Five days after fellow Dane Anders Hansen won the European Tour's flagship event, the PGA Championship, Vibe-Hastrup fired a seven-under-par 63 for an eight-under total of 130 at Celtic Manor.
Australian Brett Rumford (66) and Britons Alastair Forsyth (65) and Steven O'Hara (66) were one stroke adrift.
Vibe-Hastrup is 149th on the money-list, with no career victories to his name, but an eagle and five birdies boosted his hopes of following in Hansen's footsteps.
"Inspired by Anders? Absolutely," he told reporters. "I have played a lot with him and he goes out and wins the biggest tournament on tour.
"We are very similar, straight off the tee, with a good iron-game. It would be fantastic to win the week after Anders."
While Rumford and Forsyth have won on tour, O'Hara is another looking for a maiden title.
There are two top names in the group two shots off the pace.
Britain's Paul Broadhurst, who shared the lead going into the final round of the PGA before collapsing to 20th with a closing 80, carded a 67 on Friday.
South African David Frost, 47, continuing to flourish on the tour after finishing joint second at the Madeira Island Open in March, shot a 64.
He is trying to gain his card for next year's tour before going on to the seniors circuit.
"I've made some swing changes to come back to the European Tour and I hope to get enough invitations now to make sure I get my card and then play here again next year before going on to the seniors," said Frost.
