Mikko Ilonen becomes first Finnish winner

Finn Mikko Ilonen fired a final round 70 to record a one-shot victory at the Indonesian Open on Sunday and secure his maiden professional victory in the $1 million event with a nine-under-par 275.

The 27-year-old Ilonen moved to the top of the leaderboard with an outward 34 at the par-71 Damai Indah Golf and Country Club in Jakarta before the players were called off the course for more than two hours because of a lightning warning.

Upon his return, the Finn registered seven pars, a birdie and a bogey on the back nine to finish ahead of Australia's Andrew Tampion, India's Shiv Kapur and Frankie Minoza of the Philippines, who shared second place in the co-sanctioned European and Asian Tour event.

"It feels amazing," Ilonen, the first Finn to record a victory on the European tour, said in a televised interview.

"It's been a really long week and now it's finished."

Ilonen tied for seventh at last week's Malaysian Open and, after spending all four rounds of the weather-affected event in Jakarta in the top two, said he was playing some of the best golf of his life.

"This week, everything went right," he said. "The lightning delay helped and I was swinging better when we came back out. It all went really well for me."

Thailand's Thammanoon Srirot and South Korea's Suk Jong-yul finished in a tie for fifth place on five-under 279.

Defending champion Simon Dyson of Britain finished in a tie for 11th place on two-under for the tournament.
