Deane Beman to receive Lifetime Achievment Award

Former PGA Tour commissioner Deane Beman, the driving force behind the game's most lucrative circuit, became the seventh recipient of the Tour's lifetime achievement award on Wednesday.

The 69-year-old American, who oversaw the most explosive period of growth in Tour history, was honored on the eve of the Tour's flagship event, the Players Championship.

"Deane Beman elevated the PGA Tour to major sports stature," Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said during the award ceremony at the Tournament Players Club (TPC) Sawgrass.

"Deane did many things that others said could not be done and we would not be standing here today at TPC Sawgrass if not for his drive and vision.

"He is a man of unique talents who was never willing to simply maintain the status quo. He never saw a challenge that he would not meet and conquer."

A twice U.S. amateur champion and four-times PGA Tour winner, Beman became the Tour's second commissioner on March 1, 1974 and served in the role until his retirement on June 1, 1994.

Tournament purses totaled $8.2 million by the end of his first year in charge and had climbed to $56.4 million for his final season.

He was instrumental in developing the Tournament Players Club system with its purpose-built stadium courses to benefit spectator viewing, the seniors Champions Tour and the minor Nationwide Tour.

Created in 1996, the lifetime achievement award honors individuals who have made an "outstanding contribution to the Tour over an extended period of time" on and off the golf course.

Beman joins previous honorees Gene Sarazen, Byron Nelson, Arnold Palmer, Sam Snead, Jack Burke junior and Pete Dye.
