Mark Wiebe made his second Champions Tour title look easy.
Wiebe never was challenged in Sunday’s final round en route to winning the inaugural $2 million Cap Cana Championship.
Entering with a three-shot lead, Wiebe maintained his advantage with a 5-under-par 67 at the scenic Punta Espada Golf Club. He finished at 14-under 202, four shots clear of Vicente Fernandez (65).
Leading wire-to-wire, Wiebe won for the first time since the 2007 SAS Championship and pocketed the $300,000 first prize.
After a bogey-free round Saturday, Wiebe left little doubt that he would finish on top after playing his first nine holes at 4-under, highlighted by an eagle at the par-5 sixth hole.
Wiebe added birdies at Nos. 10 and 12, building a five-shot lead before his lone mistake, a double-bogey at the par-5 16th. However, he recovered with two pars around a birdie at No. 17.
Fernandez climbed up the leaderboard with the best round of the day. The Argentine was red-hot on the front nine, carding five straight birdies from Nos. 4-8, then added two more at Nos. 10 and 12 during his bogey-free effort.
Craig Stadler (67) and Jay Haas (68) tied for third at 9-under.
