GREAT GIFTS FOR GOLFERS

Sergio Garcia still searching for first major

Sergio Garcia’s bid to win an elusive first major continues this week at the PGA Championship, the tournament where the Spaniard made his first great splash in 1999.

Garcia, then 19, captivated the golfing world with his spirited challenge at Medinah where he exuberantly pushed Tiger Woods to the last hole before falling one stroke short.

Now about to compete in his 10th PGA, Garcia is still aching for his first major triumph.

“This is a big week for me,” Garcia told reporters on Wednesday, the day before the opening round at Oakland Hills in the year’s last major.

“To try and win a major and to earn a lot of points for the Ryder Cup.

“I’m here to try to win, try to play my best and hope that’s good enough at the end of the week.”

Garcia, now 28, lies sixth on the European Ryder Cup team points list with the top five earning automatic berths in the team that will face the United States next month at Valhalla in Louisville, Kentucky.

The charismatic Spaniard hopes to draw on his Ryder Cup experience at Oakland Hills four years ago, when he won 4.5 points out of a possible five in a European romp.

“I hope some of the memories help me,” said Garcia, also sixth in the world rankings. “But it’s much longer than in 2004, and the rough is thicker. This is a great golf course and patience will be huge for me this week.

“There are a lot of bogeys to be made out there,” he added about the 7,395-yard layout with its heavily sloping greens. “I’ll see if I can have a chance.”
