Henrik Stenson happy with best Major finish

Swede Henrik Stenson was delighted with his battling tie for third at the British Open on Sunday, his highest finish in a major championship.

The 32-year-old moved into contention with a gritty display down the stretch before Irishman Padraig Harrington pulled away from the field over the last six holes to retain his title.

“I’m very happy with the way I played,” Stenson told reporters after shooting a one-over-par 71 in strong, gusting winds at Royal Birkdale. “I hung in there all week and fought hard.

“Like some of the guys who were out there early on Thursday morning, it was a tough start,” he added, referring to the wet, blustery weather in the opening round.

“But after that I fought well and kept my game in control in tough conditions. I was determined to try and hang on to single figures (over par).”

Stenson, who won the biggest title of his career at last year’s WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, posted a nine-over total of 289 to finish six strokes behind Harrington.

“It was a difficult day and it was all-or-nothing on the last but I went for the birdie and made bogey,” he said of his approach at the par-four 18th.

“I picked a club that would be Sunday best and I misjudged the cross-wind. I was one, one-and-a-half clubs wrong in the selection.

“Even if I hit my best shot I would have just made the front of the green,” added the six-times European Tour winner, who covered the back nine in level-par 36 to secure his first top-10 finish in a major.
