Ulrich van den Berg leads with opening 64

South African Ulrich van den Berg fired a sparkling 64 to set the pace in the Alfred Dunhill Championship first round on Thursday.

Van Den Berg's eight-under-par morning round gave him a one-stroke advantage over Sweden's Pelle Edberg in the 2010 European Tour opener.

The five-times winner on South Africa's Sunshine Tour made eight birdies without dropping a shot, including four in a row from the first hole, Van den Berg's 10th.

"The course was up for the taking today," Van den Berg, ranked 650th in the world, told reporters.

"We've had a bit of rain and it's soft. The greens are just perfect and I held it together really nicely. It was probably my best putting round for a long, long time. Normally I only watch that kind of putting display on TV!"

Edberg's 65 on the par-72 Leopard Creek layout also included eight birdies but the European Tour campaigner bogeyed the third after teeing off in comparatively cool conditions at 0630 local time (0430 GMT) in the second group out.

"I hit the driver where I wanted to and had a lot of wedges into the greens, which gave me a good score," said Edberg, who no longer has a full European Tour card after failing to get through the recent qualifying school in Spain.

"I left a couple of putts out there on the first nine, but I got a couple rolling in on the back nine."

Home player Titch Moore and Italy's Edoardo Molinari were tied for third after shooting rounds of 66.

Nine players were tied at five under, including Irish Open champion Shane Lowry, while the field's top-ranked player Ernie Els was in a good position following a four-under 68.

The South African former major champion is looking to avoid his first winless year since 1990.

The Alfred Dunhill Championship is co-sanctioned by the European Tour and the Sunshine Tour.
