JOBURG OPEN RELATED STORIES

Late birdie seals victory for Anders Hansen

Dane Anders Hansen claimed his third European tour title on Sunday when a birdie at the last hole of the Joburg Open took him to a five-under-par 66 and victory by one stroke over Andrew McLardy.

Hansen posted a 15-under-par total of 269 after starting the day a stroke behind overnight leaders David Drysdale, McLardy and Charl Schwartzel.

South African McLardy pushed his tee shot to the right on the 504-metre par-five 18th hole of the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington East Course and could not reach the green in two.

His 25-foot birdie putt was short and left of the hole to enable Hansen to clinch victory and climaxed a frustrating last six holes for McLardy, who missed birdie putts on each of them after taking a share of the lead with three successive birdies from the 10th hole.

Hansen also missed birdie opportunities on the back nine, after bogeying the par-three 12th, before setting up his victory with a front nine of 31 strokes.

The 38-year-old carded four successive birdies from the sixth hole.

Birdies on the 16th and 17th holes thrust Scotsman David Drysdale into third place on 13-under-par while the talented Briton Danny Willett also finished strongly to share fourth place with local youngsters Schwartzel and Tyrone van Aswegen.

Schwartzel’s challenge faded on the back nine as he bogied the par-three 12th with his tee shot burying itself in a bunker.

Retief Goosen, one of the pre-tournament favourites, had an eventful round, starting with two bogeys before picking up three birdies and then starting the back nine with five bogeys in six holes.

The twice major winner also bogeyed the 17th before ending his round in spectacular fashion by sinking a three-iron from 228 metres for an albatross two on the 18th but still finished well down the field, on seven-under-par in a tie for 23rd.
