Lee Westwood hoping to drive way to major success
Lee Westwood’s ability to hit long and accurately from the tee could serve him well at the U.S. PGA Championship, the Briton said on Wednesday.
The Hazeltine National measures 7,674 yards and is the longest course to host a major.
“I have been driving the ball well, whether that’s down to the work I’ve been doing in the gym or the PING driver I’ve been using for a while,” Westwood told reporters on the eve of the tournament.
“Driving has always been a strong part in my game and I plan to use that this week. Hit driver as often as possible which will obviously help shorten the course a little bit.”
The 36-year-old Englishman, whose best finish in 12 previous PGAs was a tie for 15th in 2000, said he was pleased to get another tilt at a maiden major victory after his near miss at last month’s British Open.
Westwood led by two strokes in the final round at Turnberry before finishing one shot out of a playoff won by Stewart Cink against fellow American Tom Watson.
“It’s helpful the majors are only four weeks apart,” the former European number one told reporters.
“If I would have had that third-place finish say this week, with eight months to think about it between this and the U.S. Masters, then that would have been a bit trickier.
“There are a lot of big tournaments this time of year that I can use the confidence from the Open to go into. So that’s what I’ve been trying to do.” |
