Lee Westwood happy with third place
Lee Westwood was pleased to have shaken off the disappointment of his near miss at the British Open last month by tying for third at the U.S. PGA Championship at Hazeltine on Sunday.
Briton Westwood shot a two-under-par 70 to join compatriot Rory McIlroy with a three-under total of 285.
“I’m delighted,” said Westwood, who finished five shots behind South Korean winner Yang Yong-eun.
“I’ve come back from what could have been a slight disappointment at the Open, not winning there.”
Westwood, 36, led by two strokes in the final round at Turnberry but finished one shot out of a playoff won by Stewart Cink over Tom Watson.
“It’s just forward progress all the time and can’t wait for next April,” the Englishman said with an eye on the Masters.
“I played very well today, very solidly as I have done all week. Made a few too many mistakes on the greens, but I’m sure everybody can say that.”
McIlroy, 20, also took heart from his performance at Hazeltine that capped off his first full year of competition in golf’s major championships.
“My results have been pretty good,” the Northern Irishman told reporters.
McIlroy, who also posted 70 despite beginning his round with a double bogey, tied for 20th at Augusta, was joint 10th at the U.S. Open and tied for 47th at Turnberry.
“I’m looking to build on these results next year and hopefully try to do a bit better,” he said.
“I think coming into this week, I didn’t have my best form or my best game with me, and to finish tied for third, it’s a great result for me for the last major of the year.
